Q: What is DNA and why it so special?
A: DNA is the substance in the bodies of all living things that stores the unique genetic information that, in part, makes us what we are. The DNA is normally tightly compressed into chromosomes; modern scientific methods can liberate it into something that can be seen with the naked eye, studied, and stored in forms like the Life Jewel™.Q: Where, exactly, is the pet’s DNA in the Life Jewel™?
A: The colored material wound around the wire helix is the actual DNA. At one stage in its processing, DNA looks like egg white. Normally it is a semi-opaque, white color; in the Life Jewel™ process the DNA binds a fine, luminescent pigment and forms a smooth ribbon in the groove of the wire helix.Q: Is the DNA from 1 ml of blood or a cheek swab actually visible?
A: A 1 ml blood sample from a dog or cat yields enough DNA for a Life Jewel™. DNA from cheek swabs is augmented with botanical DNA to make it easily visible. The botanical DNA acts as a lattice that supports the pet’s DNA.Q: Is the Life Jewel for other animals besides dogs?
A: Yes, the DNA of other animals – cats, horses, ferrets, birds, reptiles and even humans – can be preserved in a Life Jewel™.Q: How do I know that this is the DNA of my pet?
A: The Life Jewel™ pendant are made and guaranteed by Zoogen, the leader in companion animal DNA services. Zoogen provides certification, signed by its founder Joy Halverson, DVM, that each Life Jewel™ contains the submitted DNA.Q: Can I clone my pet from this DNA?
A: No. The DNA in the Life Jewel™ is not intended for cloning, now or in the future.Q: What if my pet is lost or stolen and I need to prove its identity. Can I use the DNA
in the Life Jewel™ for DNA testing?
A: The DNA in the Life Jewel ™ has been exposed to light and resin and may no longer be useful for DNA testing. Zoogen routinely saves some DNA but can‘t guarantee that the sample will produce a DNA profile for identification without testing it first. To be safe, you can have Zoogen perform a DNA profile and keep it on file (dogs and cats only) or bank an additional DNA sample in case you lose or break your Life Jewel ™ Pendant.
